10 Tips to Energize Your Workout
Proper pre-workout nutrition – Find the best pre-workout snack that works for you. A combination of carbohydrates and protein will give you a quick boost of energy. Stick to real food instead of energy bars which tend to rack up a whopping 200-300 calories. Also, steer clear of fibre and foods that give you gas. Keep it around 150 calories and eat your snack about 30-45 minutes before your workout.
Supplements – I’m not a fan of adding synthetic, chemical filled supplements and shakes pre-workout, but if you are feeling groggy a natural supplement like Naked Nutrition’s Naked Energy Pre-Workout Supplement might be for you! It contains only 10 ingredients, is non-gmo, vegan and gluten-free, with no added sugar or funky ingredients. It’s unflavoured so it can easily be added to a smoothie or protein shake. Music – This is the most important component for many people. I know that if I forget my headphones or my phone isn’t charged up, it will NOT be a good workout! Good music can get you in the mood and motivate you through your workout. I’m always on the hunt for new music to add to my playlist. You can also try an online streaming service like Google Play or Spotify.
Switch it up – Change up your routines, or increase your weights every few weeks. Try a different form of cardio, if you’re always using the elliptical, jump on the treadmill or try a HIIT workout. Keep your muscles guessing so you don’t plateau.
Invest in proper gear – Not only do you feel good when you look good but wearing the proper workout gear will wick away sweat, keeping you dry and more comfortable. A properly fitting sneaker will help diminish blisters keeping your feet comfy allowing you to power through that workout.
Try a new class – Get out of your comfort zone and change things up with group workout classes. Many gyms include free classes with a membership. Choose from spin, barre, yoga, pilates, step, kickboxing, bootcamp…the list goes on!
Set small goals – I’m not talking long-term, I am referring to a daily workout goal. Running sprints? Push yourself to get through those next 5 minutes, then another 5 minutes, before you know it, 20 minutes have passed. If you have been lifting 15 lb dumbbells, try a set with 20 lbs. Start small, and push yourself to the next level while still maintaining proper form so you don’t injure yourself.
Don’t overtrain – If you’re very fatigued or experiencing extreme muscle soreness, your body might be telling you to take a day off. Rest and recovery are very important to a workout regime. More isn’t always better in this case. Give your body a much needed rest every 2 to 3 days of strenuous workout.
Water, water, water! – I know you’ve heard it all before, but I’m here to tell you again: drink your water, and lots of it! Water prevents dehydration which leads to fatigue and the worst of all – muscle cramps!
Get enough sleep – I’m sure you know the #1 cause for fatigue and lack of energy is not getting enough sleep the night before. Getting 6-8 hours of sleep is the norm for most people. I shared a few of my favourite tips on how to improve your sleep here.
