5 Tips to Help You Achieve Your Health Goals

The first step to achieving your health goals is to actually WANT it. Once you have made that decision you have conquered half the battle, but we all need a little help from time to time. With all of the information out there on diet and exercise it can be incredibly overwhelming. Sometimes you just need to keep it simple on order to succeed.  Here are 5 tips to help you achieve your health goals.

Keep a Food Diary and Weigh your Food – at least in the beginning

This can be one of the most daunting tasks, but trust me, once you hold yourself accountable for what you are putting into your body you’ll be able to see where you can start making some dietary changes.   Whether you’re old school and like to write it in a diary or tech savvy and prefer to use an app such as My Fitness Pal, start logging your food. Portion control is also a big part of it. After a while you’ll be able to eyeball what 4 ounces of chicken looks like, but until then I recommend getting a food scale and some measuring cups to portion out your food and keep track.

Find Healthy Substitutes and Slowly Implement Them

If you drink a lot of soda/pop it would be unrealistic to cut it cold turkey. A really great trick is using flavoured stevia drops in club soda. It makes a flavoured, naturally sweetened carbonated drink with no added sugar. You can then go a step further and replace the stevia drops with fresh fruit.

Give yourself at least 21 days to implement a new habit and don’t be hard on yourself if you have a slip up, tomorrow is a new day!

Make Time for Exercise

Just like brushing your teeth is a daily part of your routine, exercise should be too. I get it, we all have busy lives and before you know it the day has slipped away. Are you a morning person? Set the alarm one hour earlier and rise and grind. Do you prefer to workout in the evenings like I do? I pack my gym bag in the morning and take it with me so I go straight to the gym after work. I know if I head home, plop on the couch and eat dinner, I probably won’t get back there in the evening. Bottom line is if you want to make a change you have to incorporate daily exercise.

Set Attainable Goals

Saying things like “I want to lose 100 lbs by next year” is a big goal and might be a bit unrealistic to some people. Break them down into smaller more attainable goals like “I want to lose 1-2 lbs each week” or “I want to drink 8-10 glasses of water today”. It is that much more rewarding attaining smaller goals throughout the week.

Find Yourself a Workout Buddy

Whether it’s your partner, spouse or best friend, workouts are always more fun when you have a partner in crime. They hold you accountable, cheer you on and become your support system. Having a buddy will increase your chances of success and make those 6am bootcamps a tad more enjoyable.
