No gym, no problem! At home Tabata workout

It’s that time of year…our gym recently closed down for its annual maintenance. That’s 8 whole days without my haven, what ever will I do!?  Well, I’ve been running more, not my favourite thing but it’s actually cooled off a bit so it’s now tolerable. On days when I feel like sweating it out in my non-air conditioned house I do a Tabata workout.

I have been obsessed with Tabata workouts lately. I’m the type of person who does not like spending hours in the gym .I like to get in, get out and have the most effective workout.  Tabata, invented by Dr. Izumi Tabata, a Japanese physician and researcher, is an interval style of high intensity exercise.  You perform a serious of exercises, depending on how long you want to workout, anywhere from 16-32 minutes is the norm.  You do one exercise for 20 seconds as hard as you can, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 8 times for a total of 4 minutes.  Do the same thing for the next exercise, etc.  Sounds easy right? Wrong! 20 seconds doesn’t seem like a long time but when you are doing 8 sets of burpees, push-ups or squats, it seems like an eternity!

I decided to make a video for you all because nothing is more fun than seeing yourself in a sweaty mess on camera – the things I do for you guys 🙂

In the video I preformed:

Jump Rope
Burpees with jump
Squats
Push-Ups
Jumping Jacks
Ski Jumps (I called these “side steps” in the video)
Mountain Climbers
Forward and Back Jump (I called these “ski jumps” in the video)

Usually these are done without weights so it makes it even easier to do at home but feel free to add dumbbells to challenge yourself.  You will be sweating within the first minute, I guarantee!

Next time you are looking for an effective at-home or gym workout, give Tabata a try! What are your favourite at-home workouts?
