Protein Packed Turkey Quinoa Burgers

I just realized it’s been quite a while since I posted a meat recipe!  Now that BBQ season is in full effect I thought I’d share a great recipe that puts a little twist on the traditional burger. Why not add some quinoa to your burgers!  Quinoa is very high in protein, gluten-free and the perfect complex carb.  Instead of having it at as side dish, make it the main event! Makes 5 burger patties (4.5 oz each)

1 lb lean ground turkey
1/2 cup cooked quinoa
1/4 cup red onion, diced
1 egg
2 Tbsp ground flaxseed
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cumin
Dash of worcestershire sauce
Dash of liquid smoke (optional)
S&P to taste

Preheat your BBQ or grill to medium-high heat.  Add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix well with your hands.  turkeyquinoaMeasure out by scale or eyeball 5 x 4.5 ounce patties.  To get the perfect shaped patties, I use the lid of an empty protein powder container.  I just line it with cellophane and press the meat into the lid; it makes the perfect shaped burgers every time!turkeyquinoa2 turkeyquinoa3Cook the patties for about 7 minutes a side.  Serve it up with your favourite burger fixings and enjoy!

I also made a quick and easy sweet and spicy yogurt sauce to go with the burgers.  Mix 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt with a dash of chili powder, squeeze of lemon juice and about 1/2 – 1 Tbsp of honey. Serves 5.turkeyquinoa5Nutritional Info for one burger patty
