My favourite time of the year

market3photo 2(23)Ahhh ’tis the season for farmer’s markets. I just love it! The fresh local food, the treats, the hustle and bustle. The whole town seems to come down to check it out. My favourite part is by far getting fresh, local produce.

Trail’s market is situated along the Columbia River and even if you’re not looking to buy anything it is a beautiful walk along the river.
photo 4(7)There are close to 50 vendors with a wide range of produce, baked goods, plants, pottery, clothing, jewelry, crafts and much, much more.

Here are some of the goodies I snatched up. This produce is all BC grown, and come from The Biggest Little Fruit Stand.  This is just a fraction of what they have to offer; they will have plenty more variety at the upcoming markets. Here is Rya showing off their strawberries; I can’t wait to make something delicious with these!
photo 2(24)photo 1(22)I also got myself a little basil plant for the window sill. Now I just have to keep it alive!
photo 3(17)This food truck smelled amazing! It’s called Wicked Southern Barbeque from Winlaw; that’s Mark in the window. Even though I didn’t try it, the smell was just intoxicating…mmm…BBQ. I will get the hubbs to come down next time so he can try it out and let you know how it is.
photo 1(21)Here’s a few tips for when you head to your local market:

  • For the best selection get there early. That way you get your pick of the best stuff! Although, waiting until the end might get you a bargain as some vendors would rather sell stuff at a discounted price than cart it back with them.
  • BYOB (Bring Your Own Bags – no, not booze – although booze might make the market interesting!)  Not only is it good for the environment but not all vendors have plastic bags with them or they may have run out.
  • Bring small bills/change. Nothing is more annoying than breaking a hundred for a $3 bag of potatoes.
  • Lastly, go with an open mind and don’t be afraid to try new things. You never know, you just might like it!

If you’re in the Kootenays stop by every second Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Esplanade Street in Trail, BC. For more information on Trail’s market you can visit the Chamber of Commerce website.

Are there markets in your area? What’s your favourite part?

Oh nice! Our strawberries just started. I’m looking forward to next month when there will be much more. I’ll be buying flats of fruit and freezing it. Have to stock up!!
