I know I’ve already mentioned that I read Crazy, Sexy, Diet by Kris Carr (which by the way isn’t some fad DIET but more of a lifestyle), so I thought I’d share a few posts on some of my favourite parts of the book and what I am going to try to implement in my daily routine.First, let me give you a little background on the author. She has written 5 books: Crazy Sexy Diet (#1 Amazon Best Seller, NY Times Best Seller), Crazy Sexy Kitchen (NY Times Best Seller), Crazy Sexy Cancer, Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips; and Crazy Sexy Cancer Survivor. In 2003, she was diagnosed with a very rare and incurable, slow-growing, stage 4 cancer. This was her wake up call. She went from eating frozen dinners and guzzling cocktails to a vegan, plant based diet. Ten years ago she was given ten years to live; she has beat those odds and is here to tell you how easy it is to start making changes today!
Her book was very well laid out, informative, and very funny! Her quirky, fun, optimistic outlook on life shone through and although her diagnosis would be tragic for anyone, she turned it in to an uplifting experience and a way to share with the world how to change your way of eating and living.
This post is about her chapter on alkalizing your body. What does this mean?? Here’s a quick lesson for ya…your body has a certain level of pH which is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. If something is neutral, it has a pH of 7.0. Above 7.0, it’s alkaline and below 7.0 it’s acidic. The more alkaline, the more oxygen it has; the more acidic, the less oxygen it has. So what does all this mean?? Well, an acidic state is a breeding ground for bad bacteria, yeast and fungi, while and alkaline environment helps keep these guys in check. Your ideal pH would be slightly alkaline at about 7.3. Even a minor fluctuation can cause distress signals. It’s not just diet that can affect your pH. Lack of exercise, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and stress can also make you acidic.
So how do you find out your pH? The simplest and cheapest way is to test your urine. You can buy litmus pH strips online for about $10. This may sound a bit extreme but if you really want to know all it takes if a few strips and a few tests to get an accurate reading, as they may fluctuate. You should aim to fall within the 6.8 to 7.5 pH range.
OK, I get it. You may not go so far as to test your pee. It might sound a little crazy! But I thought I would throw it out there for those of you who are curious. What you can start doing though is eating more alkaline foods. The chart below shows you some alkaline vs acidic foods.
Ideally you want to start incorporating more raw, alkaline foods into your diet. You want to aim to have 60-80% of your diet from alkaline foods and only 20-40% acidic. Carr also boasts about the power of raw and living foods such as leafy greens, wheatgrass, vegetables, some fruit, grains, green juice, sprouts and smoothies. These foods fill your blood with chlorophyll, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, nutrients and OXYGEN. Healthy cells LOVE oxygen and thrive on an alkaline, oxygen-rich, plant-based diet. Unhealthy cells, like cancer cells, viruses, and bacteria HATE oxygen but LOVE an acidic diet full of animal products, processed and refined foods and synthetic chemicals. When your body is acidic, it gives cancer and diseased cells a breeding playground. When your body is alkaline absolutely no disease can survive or thrive – it’s as simple as that!!
You can start incorporating more raw foods into your diet today! I’m not referring to raw meat here. A raw food diet is usually vegan based. A first step would be cutting back animal products and not cooking your veggies above 115C, lightly steaming is fine. This allows us to absorb all the enzymes and nutrients in all their glory! Try it out a couple times a week, then maybe a few more times. See how you like it. I’m still in the process too so we can do it together 🙂
I’ve also just ordered some pHresh greens, an alkalizing super food that has an entire days worth of raw, green, alkalizing, veggie goodness. You simply add it to water or a smoothie and take in all that awesomeness. It’s literally on its way now. I will be sure to do a review on it when I try it out. PS you can also buy pH strips from their website…you know, in case you wanted to test your pee 😉
I’ll end this with a quote from Ms. Carr “If your body is your temple, then your mouth is the altar. From this day forward, vow to treat yourself like a Divine Being.”
Amen sista. Amen.
