Organization 101

Every time I open my flour cupboard it’s like something right out of Mission Impossible. I slowly inch it open, while looking up to see if a half closed bag of flour or sugar will topple onto my head, and when I’ve successfully opened it without injury or a giant, powdery mess, I do a little happy dance, kind of like this…

(OK, not really, but in my head I am yelling “YES!”)

Since going gluten-free I have collected a bazillion different types of flour; almond, rice, flax, coconut, tapioca…seriously, what can’t they make flour from?! It was starting to get out of hand, very unorganized and super messy!! Arggh. Now, I’ve been known to be slightly OCD when it comes to organization so you can see how this was driving me nuts…
SAMSUNGSAMSUNGWhat was an organized freak to do?? Well, I marched on down to Wal-Mart and bought me a super duper pack of plastic containers. These are their Mainstays brand and only cost about $2 for 4. I learned my lesson in “you get what you pay for” because the first lid I popped on cracked the container…

Must be my huge guns…or maybe the container was just cheap (I’ll go with the later on this one). So, I trashed that one and continued on carefully!

I got these awesome chalkboard labels and marker on Amazon. They were pretty cheap also, but worked like a charm! You simply stick them, write on it with chalk or the fancy-super-cool marker, and when you’re ready to switch out what’s in the container they wipe clean with water so you can write a new label – nifty!  The labels were $12 for 22 different sizes and the chalkboard marker was $5. Did anyone else out there not know that chalkboard markers existed?! I always wondered how they got such perfect writing on those deli sandwich boards! I was SO tempted to buy every colour but I just stuck with white.PhotoGrid_1367432901629This is my cupboard before and after…PhotoGrid_1367433025350

Ahhh, now I can relax 🙂 OK…maybe I should move on to the pantry next.

Do you have an out of control cupboard or pantry??!?!

I desperately need to do this too! It’s actually one of the reasons I haven’t tried much gf baking yet because I knew it would make my baking cabinet a mess if I didn’t start with a game plan on how to keep to keep it organized with all those different flours. On my next shopping trip I’ll be picking up some new containers and will have to look for those markers and labels. Thanks for the inspiration!

No prob! It took me a while to get the motivation to do it, but now I can see everything and I don’t get attacked by flour when I open the cupboard!
